The United States withdrew its troops and thus protection from South Korea. This left defense of the South to the inadequately trained and poorly equipped and led Republic Of Korea (ROK) Army. It was no match for the huge and well equipped North Korean Army which had the backing of both the Chinese Communists and the Soviet Union.
